Exhibition “Dijana’s Children” Opened in Novi Sad

Today, exhibition “Dijana’s Children” was opened in the Great Hall of the Military Club in Novi Sad. After Belgrade and Niš, the audience of Novi Sad will have an opportunity to see a one of a kind homage to Dijana Budisavljević, and Austrian woman, a somewhat forgotten name in Serbian history, who during the Second World War, risking her own life and the lives of her loved ones, saved more than 12 thousand mostly Serbian children from Ustasha concentration camps.

The exhibition, of the authors Slađana Zarić and Ivan Mangov, was opened today by Commander of the First Army Brigade Brigadier General Željko Petrović.

- The attempts to save from oblivion the deeds of Dijana Budisavljević are yielding results since more and more people are appearing who remember having been saved as children from Croatian death camps by a woman whose name they did not know until recently. This exhibition and remembering Dijana are an opportunity for us to understand that history is made by destinies of small, unknown people whose actions resound in the eternity, without whom we would not have existed, or great heroes – General Petrović highlighted adding that they hoped that in the times that would come we would have many noble individuals such as Dijana Budisavljević.

Dijana Budisavljević with her associates organised the greatest humanitarian campaign during the Second World War. Although the exact number cannot be ascertained she saved more than 7,500 Serbian little ones from certain death in the system of camps in Jasenovac.

The opening of the exhibition in Novi Sad was attended by members of Novi Sad Garrison, Head of South Bačka District Milan Novaković, and representatives of cultural institutions from Novi Sad, Serbian Orthodox Church, Associations of Veterans and military pensioners and numerous citizens.

The exhibition “Dijana’s Children” is jointly organised by Radio Television of Serbia and Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Defence.
