Improvement of cooperation with Germany

The Defence Minister Zoran Djordjevic talked today with the delegation of the German Bundestag led by Mr. Hans-Peter Friedrich and Florian Hahn. The interlocutors exchanged views on the political and security situation in the region of the Western Balkans and the current security challenges at the global level.

Minister Djordjevic informed the guests about the current process of the EU integration, priorities of the Ministry of Defence in the field of the Common Security and Defence Policy with a special emphasis on the migrant crisis as the greatest challenge that the world faces today.

“Serbia would like to be the stability factor in the region and the partner which would contribute to the European security. Our commitment is to be military neutral, and our strategic decision is to become the EU member”, Minister Djordjevic said.

At the meeting the interlocutors assessed that the defence cooperation between Serbia and Germany was comprehensive and diverse, and that there are possibilities for the enhancement in the fields of mutual interest, especially the military-to-military and military economic collaboration in the sphere of defence industry.

As a significant breakthrough in the cooperation so far Minister Djordjevic stressed the joint engagement in the EU Training Mission in Mali (EUTM Mali), adding that he expects that joint training and engagement in multinational operations will be the main field of cooperation in the following period. The interlocutors were informed that in the following period we expect definition and adoption of legal framework that will enable participation of the Republic of Serbia in the EU civil missions.

Besides preparations for deployment and joint participation in multinational operations, the interlocutors talked about collaboration in the field of education and training, military medicine and armament control.

It was assessed that besides continuation of cooperation in the main fields, the organization of joint training and exercises, for the beginning even at a lower level, would give special quality to the collaboration.

At the end of the meeting the interlocutors expressed the expectation that good relations established by the governments of two countries would improve by a meeting of the Serbian and German Defence Ministers.
